Luckily, mine survived all the tubes and wires, and is now a healthy 14 year old! Boy, did this bring back memories! Many thanks for the sensitive way in which you dealt with what can be, and often is, a very hard topic for parents to cope with, and also something not often mentioned. The fears of parents are very real in this situation, but most of the time a healthy child results, and empathy can be the most important factor in helping parents cope.
